Why I’m Head Over Heels for Perplexity (And Why Home Service Pros Will Be Too)

Like most of us, I’m sure you’ve relied on Google for years to search for everything from new tools to how-tos and marketing tips. But a few weeks ago, I decided to give Perplexity a try, and wow—what an upgrade!

Think of it like going from a beat-up old truck to a sleek, powerful machine. Both get the job done, but one of them does it with way more efficiency, precision, and no headaches.

Now, I’m using Perplexity for about 90% of my searches, only turning to Google for things like finding the closest supplier or browsing images.

HERE’S WHY PERPLEXITY HAS WON ME OVER AS A HOME SERVICE PRO:
  • Time Efficiency: No more sifting through pages of so-so results. Perplexity gives you the best info upfront, saving time when you’re on the job or researching your next project.

  • Ad-Free Bliss: No more distractions from ads for tools you looked at once. It’s like having a cleaner, more focused workspace for your searches.

  • Quality Information: Perplexity acts like your personal assistant who has already read the articles and summarizes the key points for you.

  • Conversation-Style Searches: Whether you’re troubleshooting an installation issue or looking for new marketing ideas, you can ask follow-up questions and go down the rabbit hole with ease. It’s like chatting with the industry’s best expert who’s always available.

  • Source Transparency: Every piece of info comes with reliable sources, so you can trust you’re not wasting time on bad advice.

But here’s the kicker: Even though Perplexity is better for most searches, I found myself going back to Google just out of habit. It’s like when you upgrade your tools but still reach for the old ones because that’s what you’re used to. The solution? I made Perplexity my default search engine.

Game. Changer.
 
Here’s how you can do it too:
  1. Open Google Chrome. Launch Chrome on your computer.
  2. Access Chrome Settings. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Search Engine Settings. Click on ‘Search engine’ in the sidebar, then choose ‘Manage search engines.’
  4. Add Perplexity AI. Scroll down to ‘Site search’ and click ‘Add.’ Enter the following details:
  5. Set as Default. After adding, click the three dots next to Perplexity AI and select ‘Make default.’
 
Now, every time you search, you’ll be greeted by Perplexity’s streamlined, ad-free interface with results that get straight to the point.

For home service pros like us, this is a huge upgrade:
  • Faster research when you need info on new tools, techniques, or materials
  • Content ideas for your marketing campaigns, based on deep insights and trends
  • Smarter business decisions with access to reliable, relevant information
  • Better brainstorming when you need inspiration or solutions to challenges on the fly
 
But the best part? Perplexity lets you ask follow-up questions. You’re not just getting one result; you’re having a conversation with the world’s knowledge base.

For example, if you’re researching ways to boost your online presence:

  • Initial query: “Best marketing strategies for home service pros”
  • Follow-up: “How can local SEO help my business?”
  • Deeper dive: “Affordable tools for improving local SEO”
  • Specific use case: “Case studies of home service businesses using SEO to drive leads”
